I do not paint answers. I paint questions.
For me, painting is another way of seeing the world: discovering unfamiliar meanings within familiar things, and carrying emotions and memories that words cannot express into color and form.
The saury that appears in my work is no mere fish. It is the self of my childhood that I had forgotten; the heart that fell silent while fitting itself to the standards of the world; the trace of a dream I have not yet given up.
One day, in the moment I faced a saury in the freezer, I found myself gazing, together with the fish, at the self that had long remained within me. That encounter led to a single question.
What did I love?
What dreams did I dream?
When did I stop being honest with myself?
These questions carried me into the past, and at the same time let me meet who I am now, once again. The act of painting became a process of listening to feelings I had long turned away from, and of holding close once more the heart I had forgotten.
To me, light is not simple brightness. It is hope that does not disappear even after passing through darkness, and a heart that seeks to understand beings different from itself. Like the saury, which never loses its silver gleam amid rough waves, I believe our lives, too, carry a light of their own even in moments of trembling.
Through my work, I do not wish to tell viewers the correct answer. Instead, I wish to awaken a single question that has long slept in each heart — and I hope that, at the end of that question, we may at last return to ourselves.
The saury is not an answer, but an aesthetics of questions. Soundless questions, crouched within a silence that has lost its answer, will go on layering the deepest colors of asking, within a wave that never, ever ceases.
I have finally returned to myself.
That is the reason I paint, and the smallest light my art wishes to offer.
